Energy Transport in the Quantum Harmonic Chain in Contact with Phonon Reservoirs

چکیده
We study energy transport in the quantum harmonic chain whose ends are in contact with two heat reservoirs at different temperatures. On the assumption that the reservoirs are composed of an infinite number of independent harmonic oscillators we derive the master equation that governs the time evolution of the reduced density matrix for the system. Mean kinetic energy of each particle and energy flux are calculated by perturbation with respect to the coupling constant. In the leading order obtained is the same bulk behavior as in the quantum Langevin approach. However, temperature profile near the ends is different due to contributions from higher-order terms when temperature is high and the reservoirs are non-Ohmic. The classical

Anomalous energy transport in FPU-β chain
This paper is devoted to the derivation of a macroscopic diffusion equation (Fourier’s law) describing the transport of energy in an anharmonic chain. More precisely, we study here the so-called FPU-β chain, which is a very simple model for a one-dimensional crystal in which atoms are coupled to their nearest neighbors by a harmonic potential, weakly perturbed by a quartic potential. The starti...

With this work we investigate the stationary nonequilibrium density matrix of current carrying nonequilibrium steady states of in-between quantum systems that are connected to reservoirs. We describe the analytical procedure to obtain the explicit result for the reduced density matrix of quantum transport when the system, the connecting reservoirs, and the system-reservoir interactions are desc...
متن کاملCrossover from ballistic to diffusive thermal transport in quantum Langevin dynamics study of a harmonic chain connected to self-consistent reservoirs.
Through an exact analysis using quantum Langevin dynamics, we demonstrate the crossover from ballistic to diffusive thermal transport in a harmonic chain with each site connected to Ohmic heat reservoirs. The temperatures of the two heat baths at the boundaries are specified from the beginning, whereas the temperatures of the interior heat reservoirs are determined self-consistently by demandin...

Solid-state energy conversion technologies such as thermoelectric refrigeration and power generation require materials with low thermal conductivity yet high electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficiency. Although semiconductors are the best thermoelectric materials, they rarely have the such features. Nanostructures such as superlattices, quantum wires, and quantum dots provide novel method...

We studied the phononic heat transfer through an atomic dielectric wire with both infinite and finite lengths by using a model Hamiltonian approach. At low temperature under ballistic transport, the thermal conductance contributed by each phonon branch of a uniform and harmonic chain cannot exceed the well-known value which depends linearly on temperature but is material independent. We predict...
